Sussex, county by county

Sussex grows more wine than anywhere else in Britain, and the vineyards are not evenly spread. They cluster — around the Arun valley at Pulborough, along the Rother in the far east, beneath the Downs at Ditchling. Those clusters are the useful unit: they're what makes two vineyards, a pub and a walk into one Saturday rather than three separate drives.

Days that actually work

The useful question isn't which vineyard is best — it's which two or three make a day without a car and a designated driver. These are the routes the data supports, each built around a single station.

What to know before you go

Of the 37 vineyards here, 32 run regular public tours and tastings. The rest open by appointment or on scheduled open days only, which is worth knowing before you drive to one on spec. 14 serve food on site and 14 have somewhere to stay — a distinction that matters more than it sounds, because the one real flaw in a vineyard day out is that somebody has to drive home.

Almost every estate here sits within a short taxi or drive of a station. Seven of them are reachable from Pulborough alone, which makes it the most useful platform in English wine.
